Azores, Sao Jorge

The island of São Jorge consists of a large single elongated volcano and the small cones in the middle of the island have resulted from recent volcanic eruptions. On the coast the steep cliffs which drop to the sea extend onto unusual basalt platforms level with the sea, these fajas as they are known are the remains of eroded cliff faces that have collapsed. Many have been converted into fertile orchards or farmland, producing tropical fruits and beautiful dragon-trees thanks to a favourable micro-climate. São Jorge is well known for its large round cheeses, these are made from the milk of the local dairy cattle that graze on pastures amongst hydrangeas. Your hotel will be the Hotel Sao Jorge in Velas which is very comfortable with good facilities and a swimming pool.
