Discovering Madeira – The Easy Way

Few destinations offer such a variety of scenery – breathtaking sea cliffs, rocky peaks, alpine plateaus, lush valleys and mountain terracing, yet Madeira retains an unspoilt beauty and natural charm. This self-guided walk is two centre based – 4 nights in Funchal and 3 nights at Machico on the east coast. Access to the start of some of the walks and the return is by local bus.

Day 1. Arrival at Funchal airport and transfer to hotel, overnight Funchal.

Day 2. Transfer to Aguas Mansas to walk along the old Levada da Serra to the village of Santo da Serra, where you have time to visit the magnificent Blandy Park gardens before taking the bus back to Funchal, 13km/8.2miles. Overnight Funchal.

Day 3. Minibus transfer to the start of this walk which takes you through a landscape rich with vineyards and fruit trees, following the levada do Norte. The full walk is 20km/12.5miles but it can easily be shortened. Overnight Funchal.

Day 4. The magnificent Socorridos river valley is the focus of today’s half day walk which takes you through to a spectacular gorge, 8.5km/5.3miles. Overnight Funchal

Day 5. Minibus transfer to the start of the walk along the Levada do Furado from Ribeira Frio to Portela with its breathtaking views down to the coast, 11km/6.8 miles. Overnight Machico.

Day 6. Today you have a short bus ride to the village of Marocas to walk along the Levada Canical above the valley passing a patchwork of small fields and typical farms. You walk back to Machico, 13km/8.2miles. Overnight Machico.

Day 7. The local bus takes you to and from the walk today. It is a relatively short walk allowing you plenty of time to explore the beautiful São Lourenço Point with its stunning lava rocks, 7km/4.3miles. Overnight Machico.

Day 8. Transfer back to the airport in Funchal.
